Dusting Our Souls: A Content-Driven, Exploratory Workshop
with Sharyn Hyatt-Wade Saturday, December 12th, 1-4 PM
With this concept-driven studio experience, Hyatt returns to her passion of teaching art, not through media and technique, but through introspection, collaboration and soul-searching.
The upcoming exhibitions at CAL serve as inspiration and a jumping off point for conversations, journal prompts, sketches that and evolving works as they relate to CAL's 2016 exhibitions calendar and the rich themes of Inside Voices, Pathways and Passages, Interpretations IV and Chromophobia. There will be no restrictions on media or technique (bring all you can carry!). Just arrive with an open mind and willingness to leave your comfort zone.

Upcoming events at the Columbia Art League
Our ever popular Tea & Hats afternoon tea is coming up on Wednesday 28th October! We'll provide the tea and cakes, you bring a hat.
If you don't have a hat, that's fine too, you still get to eat the cakes! In case you're in the market for a new hat, the afternoon does include a hat-buying opportunity thanks to St. Louis-based milliner Diane Tessman whose hats were a big hit at last year's tea. She'll have more of her gorgeous creations with her.
A new addition to this year's tea is a rare pastry demonstration by the University Club's award winning Chef, Daniel Pliska. Chef Pliska will also be talking about his new book, 'Pastry and Dessert Techniques', which was a 4-year labor of love and includes full-page glossy photos. He'll have a limited number of signed books for sale at the tea.
Tickets for the tea cost $30 per person and are available from CAL and also via Paypal from the CAL website. You can also purchase a full table (8 seats) for $350 which includes two CAL Patron-level memberships and 10% discount vouchers for all your guests towards any purchases they make of the table-top artworks displayed at the tea.
Proceeds from the tea go towards CAL's art-reach programming, so you get to eat cakes AND help us create more art-making opportunities out in the community.
And men, you're definitely invited too - bowlers, pith helmets and berets are most welcome!

Missouri artist Steven Wilson and his new still life "Mid day bloom"
Title: Mid day bloom
Size in inches: 24 x 22
Medium: Acrylic, mortar sand, crafter colored sand, white flake, modeling paste
This work is a spring still life I did of a vase of flowers. I completely blurred the background and turned the table clothe into a sand wall. The work is on masonite I had cut from the local Lowe's store. I use gloss varnish (acrylic) as the adhesive for the heavier sand mixes.

Artist Steven Wilson and the expressionism of the Navajo woman
On my last trip to New Mexico I took the back way. In the fall there are many festivals and on this occasion I came across a group of Navajo women cleaning up the grounds. I was North of Gallup. She was standing alone and looking out onto the empty fields. I don't know why, but I pulled over and took a quick sketch.
The title is Lewranti. It is 36 x 24 on canvas. The materials used are ceramic stucco, resin sand, acrylic, and white flake.
