For
this blog, it is rare that I stray from the mandate of informing the locals
about art happenings in the area. I do
everything to stay on this path, but this one is a tangent worth moving into. It is personal and professional.
As
I was shopping in Jefferson city, MO at the Hobby Lobby I noticed a new bottle
on the shelf. I recognized it immediately due to the fact I use the material in
the bottle all the time, but it was strange because I had never seen the bottle
for sale in this store. This new bottle
was Walnut Alkyd oil medium which is produced by M Graham. I frequent Hobby Lobby but maybe once a month
or so, but seeing the walnut oil made me want to search more. How many other goodies had they placed in when
I was away?
The
very next week I went back to Hobby Lobby.
I saw the display. A display case I had seen in Rolla Toys and
Books. It was an M Graham oil paint
display. It carried all their standard
colors and a few extras. I searched for
the acrylic but there was none. Just the
oil, but that in itself is plenty. The
excitement was that of a child on Christmas morning.
I
usually have to order Graham Oils. I don’t
mind because I love walnut oil and the finish of Graham paints. But now they are just down the road. No internet, no double clicking, no waiting,
no shipping.
Warning
though; like everything else in Hobby
Lobby, the prices you pay on line are lower than in store. M Graham does vary in prices per color, so
some tubes like the cadmiums are over $20.00 for the 37 ml tubes.
Sticker
shock aside, these are professional grade oil paints. I challenge anyone to use the walnut mediums
and find a flaw. Using these paints is not just a tip o the hat to historical
painters, but it also allows painters to have a eco-friendly studio due to the
replacement of paint thinners with walnut oil.
Congratulations to Jefferson City. M Graham is here. Paint away!!
