2016 might still be four months away, but the CALendar of next year's shows is all done. So, grab your paintbrush, camera, pastel stick, lump of clay, or your favorite creating tool, and let me give you a guided tour of the first three juried shows in the gallery in 2016.
Inside Voices
January 12-February 19
Inside Voices invites artists to explore the range of emotions that constantly vie for our attention deep in our heads and hearts: Joy, Love, Anger, Sadness, Fear, Loathing. How does what we see around us affect our subconscious mind? What inspires great joy? What creates a feeling of sadness? What makes us angry? What makes our lip curl in disgust? Will an artwork evoke the same feeling in the viewer as it does in the artist? Think conceptually or think materially to create artworks that evoke an emotional response. Inspired by Pixar Animation Studio's summer 2015 movie 'Inside Out', Inside Voices is a voyage into our emotion-controlled interior world and the voices that accompany us on our daily journey through life.
Submission Dates: Friday 8th & Saturday 9th January
Opening Reception: Saturday 16th January
Pathways & Passages
February 23-April 15
In tandem with the True/False 2016 film festival's visual arts theme of 'Off The Trail', Pathways & Passages invites artists to explore geographical spaces; from tree-lined laneways and interior spaces, to maps, mazes, treasure trails, secret finds, directions and journeys. On a conceptual level, artists might explore personal journey, the passage of time, private or hidden places and the virtues of straying from the known. From wilderness landscapes to intimate psychological spaces, Pathways & Passages is an exploration of the art of getting lost and the things we might find along the way.
Submission Dates: Friday 19th & Saturday 20th February
Opening Reception: Saturday 27th February
Chromophobia
April 25-June 17
Color has a complex history in art. In ancient times Aristotle argued that line represented order and rationality, whereas color was chaotic and inessential. Neoclassical art theory posited that color was unwelcome in the upper echelons of aesthetic systems. Beyond the world of art history, bright colors can, for some people, elicit a real feeling of fear and aversion. Where some seek to surround themselves with white or neutral tones, others seek color at every chance. In Chromophobia, artists are invited to explore the worlds of the garish and the neutral. Go wild in the color box or exercise extreme constraint and create in the world of white and greys.
Submission Dates: Friday 22nd & Saturday 23rd April
Opening Reception: Saturday 30th AprilIf you want to submit for next year's
Interpretations IV show, please make a note on your calendar that the deadline for visual and written submissions will be
Friday April 1st.
You can see the full schedule of the 2016 shows and the submission information on the
CAL exhibitions calendar pageRemember too that we're always looking for images to go on the postcards for the shows, so if you like to work ahead and you can get a hi-res image over to me of your completed work, it could be a contender for the postcard. I generally need images 6 weeks in advance of the show.
Talking of which, we're definitely on the hunt for images for the upcoming Give a Gift of Art show postcard, so if you already know what work you are going to submit for that show (Nov-Dec), and you have a hi-res image (300dpi) pic, please email it to Diana before October 5th.
Hope that's a little inspiration for your Fall studio time!
